Willow Creek Community Church

Six compact tapped-horn subwoofers restore definition and musical low-frequency impact in a 7,200-seat worship auditorium.

Willow Creek Community Church’s main auditorium seats more than 7,200 people. Its visual and full-range systems were highly developed, but the size of the room made musical low-frequency definition difficult to achieve.

The brief

The room needed bass with enough scale for contemporary worship while remaining accurate and useful to the musicians and mix—not simply more level in an already complex acoustic environment.

The system

Six Danley TH115 tapped-horn subwoofers were added to the auditorium. Their combination of sensitivity, compact physical size and controlled musical response allowed the low-frequency system to match the rest of the production.

The result

The church reported unsolicited positive feedback, including improved kick definition and a more musical bass foundation for performers. Willow Creek shows that low frequency is part of intelligibility and timing: when it is accurate, the complete mix becomes easier to follow.
