Compare usable output, frequency range and measurement conditions
Danley engineer Ivan Beaver’s article on SPL explains why a single maximum-output number cannot describe every listening condition. The test signal, frequency range, measurement distance and distinction between measured and calculated results all affect the figure. A loudspeaker’s power-handling rating also does not directly describe its usable sound quality at that level.
Design considerations
For a venue brief, specify the audience positions and programme first. Compare output over the frequencies that matter, allow headroom for musical peaks and check how coverage changes with distance. Request the measurement conditions behind competing specifications. This gives a more useful basis for system selection than choosing the largest advertised dB number.
