Phase in system modelling: when interactions matter

Read coverage plots with the listening area in mind

In Danley’s article on phase and simulation, Sebastian Rivas explores how loudspeakers combine differently with frequency and listener position. Coverage plots can help establish aiming and audience coverage, while phase-aware calculations reveal interference between sources. Low-frequency layouts are particularly important because cancellations can extend across substantial parts of the audience area.

Design considerations

For Australian and New Zealand venue designs, review subwoofer placement and source overlap alongside overall coverage. Compare plausible layouts across several frequencies, rather than judging a system from one attractive plot. Modelling supports the design decision; on-site alignment and measurements remain part of commissioning. Ask what assumptions and calculation settings were used when reviewing a proposed system.
